Gender Policy of the FPRK: Against Discrimination and Violence

Today, on November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, proclaimed by the United Nations Convention, the Federation of Trade Unions of the Republic of Kazakhstan traditionally joined the global campaign “16 Active Days Against Violence.”

In support of the international movement, the Commission on Women’s Labor Affairs of the FPRK organized a dialogue platform with trade union leaders and activists, during which initiatives of the Federation of Trade Unions to protect working women, as well as issues related to preventing discrimination and violence in the workplace, were discussed.

The Deputy Chair of the FPRK and Chair of the Commission on Women’s Labor Affairs, Gulnara Zhumageldieva, opening the event, emphasized the protective measures taken by the Federation of Trade Unions to safeguard women’s rights.

The discussion focused on the implementation of the FPRK’s Gender Policy Concept and the “Zero Tolerance to Violence in the Labor Sphere” Concept, aimed at creating an environment that rejects violence in the workplace and preventing any potential violent or discriminatory actions.

As Gulnara Zhumageldieva, the Deputy Chair of the FPRK, emphasized, the implementation of a balanced gender policy and the integration of international standards in this area are among the tasks outlined in the Federation of Trade Unions’ Activity Strategy for 2020-2025, titled “In Unity for Justice and Development.”

Speaking about the importance of implementing international standards into national legislation, she reminded participants that an important step toward change was the Federation’s initiative to promote ILO Convention No. 190, aimed at eradicating violence and harassment in the world of work.

In line with the Federation’s initiatives, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population is already working on amendments that would hold employers accountable for workplace harassment.

The participants unanimously confirmed their readiness to defend the rights of working women and to intensify joint actions against discrimination and violence in the labor sphere.

As part of the international campaign, events dedicated to the issue of violence against women will continue to be held by the member organizations of the Federation of Trade Unions across the country.
