On Friday, February 21, a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Federation of Trade Unions of the Republic of Kazakhstan (FPRK) was held in Astana under the leadership of FPRK Chairman Satybaldy Dauletalin.
The members of the Executive Committee reviewed the plan for preparing and holding the Summer School of the Pan-European Regional Council (PERC) of the International Trade Union Confederation in Astana this July.
As a reminder, on January 16 of this year, the PERC Steering Committee approved the organization of the Summer School in Kazakhstan’s capital.
FPRK Deputy Chairperson Gulnara Zhumageldiyeva provided detailed information to the Executive Committee members about this major upcoming event.
“The PERC Summer School is a discussion platform where trade union leaders and experts address issues of mutual interest. Notably, there is growing interest in our region — Central Asia. PERC member organizations are keen to take this opportunity to learn more about trade unions and socio-economic issues in the region. The Summer School serves as a platform to promote trade union values and rights and helps prevent violations of union freedoms and rights. кDuring the sessions, topics such as Just Transition and the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the workplace will be discussed,” said Gulnara Zhumageldiyeva.
Commenting on the Executive Committee’s decision to approve the Summer School plan, FPRK Chairman Satybaldy Dauletalin emphasized that this is the first time such an event will take place in Central Asia.
“For the first time in the Central Asian region, the PERC Summer School is being held in Kazakhstan. This can be seen as a sign of great trust from our European colleagues and recognition of the FPRK’s efforts in promoting Kazakhstan’s trade union movement on the international stage. Moreover, this Summer School is also a high-profile project introducing our colleagues from PERC to not only trade union developments in Kazakhstan but also our country’s culture and history,” said Dauletalin.
During the meeting, the Executive Committee also reviewed an application to join the FPRK submitted by the Public Association “Sectoral Trade Union of Information and Communication Technology Workers.” The chairman of this new sectoral union, Malik Abilpeisov, participated in the discussion.
According to the application, the “Sectoral Trade Union of ICT Workers” was registered with the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan on November 21, 2022. It consists of 15 branches and primary trade union organizations with a total of 1,500 members. On December 10, 2024, its Central Council decided to join the FPRK as a member organization.
“Our decision to join the Federation of Trade Unions of Kazakhstan is well-considered and deliberate. We understand that the further development of our sectoral union is only possible through membership in the Federation. Only in this way can we effectively defend and protect the rights and interests of our members,” said Malik Abilpeisov, addressing the Executive Committee.
The Executive Committee took the union’s application into account; the final decision, in accordance with the FPRK Charter, will be made by the General Council of the Federation.
The Executive Committee also approved the Comprehensive Plan of Key Activities of the Federation of Trade Unions of Kazakhstan for 2025, with a focus on the Year of Working Professions and the 120th anniversary of the trade union movement in Kazakhstan. The document outlines all main areas of activity for the Federation and its member organizations.
“In addition to educational projects, the Comprehensive Plan includes activities related to labor relations regulation, conflict prevention and resolution, implementation of sectoral and regional agreements, and measures to ensure workplace safety and health. A significant portion of the plan is dedicated to the Year of Working Professions. All FPRK member organizations must make efforts to implement the plan effectively,” concluded FPRK Chairman Satybaldy Dauletalin.
