On Friday, May 2, the central office of the Federation of Trade Unions of the Republic of Kazakhstan (FTURK) hosted a meeting between FTURK Chairman Satybaldy Dauletalin and Sergejus Glovackas, Head of the Europe and Central Asia Department of the Bureau for Workers’ Activities (ACTRAV) of the International Labour Organization (ILO).
FTURK Chairman Satybaldy Dauletalin expressed his gratitude to Sergejus Glovackas for his contribution to strengthening cooperation between FTURK and the ILO.
“Every meeting with partners from the International Labour Organization is a tremendous exchange of experience in promoting the priorities of social justice and a step toward improving socio-labor relations. We thank the ILO Bureau for Workers’ Activities for supporting trade union initiatives. The mutual understanding between the ILO and FTURK has laid the foundation for cooperation between trade unions of Europe and Asia,” said Satybaldy Dauletalin.
The parties discussed plans for organizing the VERC Summer School in Astana.
“Kazakhstan, Astana, and the Federation of Trade Unions are becoming a hub attracting leaders of the global trade union movement. This is the first time an event of such scale will be held in Astana. The ACTRAV/ILO Bureau supports this initiative and will take part in the Summer School,” noted Sergejus Glovackas.
While discussing the agenda of the Summer School, the parties emphasized that both the School itself and the theme proposed for discussion among global trade union leaders —“Workplace Democracy, Collective Bargaining” — are highly relevant for trade unions across both Europe and Asia.
“Our partners from European trade unions and unions from Central Asian countries have much to discuss, and the Summer School in Astana provides a timely opportunity to share best practices. Our international partners recognize Kazakhstan as an emerging platform for dialogue, including trade union dialogue. In turn, we are working to promote progressive global standards for building social dialogue throughout Central Asia,” emphasized the FTURK Chairman.
The discussion also touched upon sectoral-level international cooperation — between trade unions and their counterparts from the same industries in different countries.
Tomorrow, on May 3, an International Scientific and Practical Conference titled “A Century of Experience: Heritage of the Past – Course Toward the Future”, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of trade unions in Kazakhstan’s education sector, will take place in Astana. Both Satybaldy Dauletalin and Sergejus Glovackas will participate in the event.
