THE HEADS OF THE NATIONAL TRADE UNION CENTERS ELECTED A NEW SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE ITUC

At the V Congress of the International Trade Union Confederation held in Melbourne, Australia, the election of a new Secretary General of the organization took place.

Two candidates were nominated for the highest post in the ITUC – Luca Vicentini, Secretary General of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), and Kemal Ozkan, Assistant Secretary General of the IndustriALL Global Union.

After the applicants presented their programs, Luca Vicentini was elected Secretary General of the International Trade Union Confederation by a secret ballot by a majority vote.

Luca Vicentini was born in 1969 in Udine, Italy. The Italian and European trade unionist headed the European Trade Union Confederation (ECU) from October 2015 to November 2022.

The head of the Kazakh delegation, Chairman of the Federation of Trade Unions of the Republic of Kazakhstan Satybaldy Dauletalin met with Luca Vicentini and congratulated him on his election as the Secretary General of the ITUC, and also thanked him for his support in considering the issue of restoring the membership of the FTURK in this authoritative international organization. The parties agreed to actively develop cooperation between the FTURK and the ITUC in promoting social justice, protecting the rights and interests of workers.

Satybaldy Dauletalin also held a number of meetings with foreign colleagues. During negotiations with the President of the Confederation of Trade Unions of Japan JTUC-RENGO, Tomoko Yoshino, they discussed joint projects on the JILAF educational program. The Chairman of the FTURK also noted that the Federation of Trade Unions successfully uses the experience of Japan in conducting “labor consultations”, and also expressed interest in the achievements of Japanese colleagues in creating a Trade Union Bank.

The head of the Kazakh delegation, Satybaldy Dauletalin, during a meeting with the President of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, Michelle O’Neill, thanked the host party for the warm welcome and the creation of comfortable working conditions for the delegates of the Congress. The parties agreed to strengthen mutual cooperation in the exchange of experience on topical issues of the trade union agenda, in particular in the promotion and ratification of conventions of the International Labor Organization.

Recall that the V Congress of the International Trade Union Confederation is being held in Melbourne from November 17 to 22. More than a thousand trade union leaders and activists representing 300 national trade union centers and uniting about 200 million workers worldwide gathered to discuss the global agenda and adopt a Declaration on a New social Contract. On the first day of the Congress, the General Council of the ITUC decided to restore the membership of the Federation of Trade Unions of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
